Not only professional soccer players are affected by muscle cramps. Many know the unpleasant feeling that often occurs in the middle of the night. However, athletes can do a few things to prevent this from happening in the first place.

What are the reasons for muscle cramps?

Is magnesium deficiency the cause of cramps?
To start with, there is no robust data to suggest magnesium deficiency and associated muscle cramps. Thus, from a professional point of view, no recommendation can be made for supplementation of magnesium for muscle cramps. The theory that excessive sweating promotes cramps due to the loss of salt and electrolytes can also not be confirmed by scientific sources. What we do know is that men are more susceptible than women, that high unaccustomed stress increases the likelihood of cramps, as do high temperatures and high humidity. Also, people who have had frequent cramps are more likely to suffer from muscle cramps again.
What helps against cramps?
As an immediate measure, it helps to stretch the affected muscle statically. However, in order for athletes to avoid cramps in the first place, it is worth paying attention to the following things:
- A workout that is adapted to the personal fitness level with adequate hydration
- Good recovery, i.e. avoiding alcohol, lack of sleep and fluid loss, which can also be caused by vomiting and diarrhea
- If cramps occur regularly on the foot, it is worth checking the footwear
- Stretching and massages of the affected muscle areas
Why does a muscle cramp feel like a sore muscle afterwards?
Because the muscle remains in a tense state during a spasm, it can be so stressed that micro-injuries can even occur, as they do during overuse. That’s why the condition after a cramp can feel like you have sore muscles.
